why we're skipping thanksgiving

We are only a week away from Thanksgiving! Can’t you just picture it? That perfectly glazed golden brown turkey surrounded by a beautiful table-scape full of pumpkins and gourds and family and friends and all the best fixins. If this has your mouth watering and you heart bursting, if Thanksgiving is your thing, then more power to ya Sister. Get your gobble gobble on. I’m not here to judge. But for me, Thanksgiving never has been and never will be a good thing.
Without ever really making a conscious decision, we slowly started skipping Thanksgiving. Small decisions at first that eventually turned into us out-rightly rejecting the holiday all together. This Thanksgiving is actually the first time we will even be in the country in years, since we were in Iceland last Thanksgiving and in Mexico the year before that. But even though we will be stateside for the holiday this year, we have no intention of celebrating it. And here’s why?

halloween things

I was just saying to Tom that this is our last Halloween of our twenties. It feels like we have to do this year big while we are still in our youth.

America, you are Beautiful

Hello from the Dominican Republic! I may be on a mission trip in another country right now, but I can't help but think about my favorite place today.

Easter in New Orleans

I think it’s safe to say that Husband and I had a pretty untraditional Easter weekend living it up in New Orleans. But nothing about our lives right now feels traditional, so why should this weekend be any different?

desert greens for st. patty's day

happy st. patty's day!
In honor of the holiday dedicated to all things green, I thought I'd share some of my favorite desert greens that we've been enjoying all week long.

a rainy day Philadelphia Valentine

Last year, we celebrated love day in the big apple with an NYC Valentine. The year before, we were in Boston. And this year we celebrated in Philadelphia. It’s become an inadvertent tradition to celebrate Valentine’s Day in a different city every year and this makes for one very happy love day. But this year in Philly was extra special because...

boating boston: kayaking the charles river

Don't you just love long weekends? Especially with being in a long distance relationship, having a little extra time to visit over the weekend makes a big difference. We had a relaxing labor day weekend and spent our time catching up on work, napping, shopping, brunching, and museum hopping. But my favorite thing we did was kayak the Charles River in Boston.

a frantic fourth

I hope everyone had a fun and safe fourth of July. Ours was completely unexpected and totally frantic. We had a bit of a scare with our pup and ended up at the emergency vet until 3AM rolling into the 4th. Not the best way to kick things off. And we wound up going back to the vet during the day too. We're just so fortunate that we found someone to take care of our furbaby during the holiday.  But this definitely put a damper on our plans and we ended up cancelling things so that we could keep an eye on our PJ pup ( I think he's out of the woods now) and catch up on some much needed sleep for ourselves. So this fourth of july was more of a reminder that things can't and won't always work out the way you planned. But at the end of it all, we're just thankful things weren't worse. FYI the fireworks pic above is from last year's fireworks show in Boston that we caught right after spending the holiday weekend camping in Vermont
