Convocation: Back to School

This past Monday was my first day back and the start of a new school year. My university makes a big deal out of convocation and so do I as it ends with an ice cream social. But in all seriousness, it's very important and everyone attends: faculty, students, and staff. We even invite dentists within the community to take part. This years guest speaker was pretty prestigious, the American Dental Association President. He gave a speech emphasizing our role as dentists in society. Something that really stuck out for me is that it is our job as medical professionals to always be learning and to learn to the best of our capabilities. As we are now finished with our basic sciences and the focus turns to dentistry, I really want to strive to do just that. I want to give my patients the best care possible, to accurately diagnose and develop treatment plans. Not only that, I want to educate and inspire those in the community around me. So with that being said, I'm looking forward to a great year!

August Budget: Lilly, Target, & Kate Spade

Lilly Pulitzer Lori Dress                                                    Lilly Pulitzer Charlton Sheath

This month's purchases will come as no surprise, especially if you read this post. I was all amped up for the Lilly Pulitzer After Party Sale and it did not disappoint. I literally wanted to grab one of everything, but I managed to maintain some self control and only picked up two dresses. Surprisingly, I didn't get any prints, but instead went for dresses that focus on texture. Still waiting on for these. Even though I haven't received a confirmation email that they have shipped yet, I still keep checking for packages. Sad huh?

La Ventana

One of my favorite places that we visited during our anniversary trip to California was The Restaurant at The Ventana in Big Sur. La Ventana literally translates to The Window and this place was definitely a window onto a picture perfect view of the Pacific Ocean and the coastal sequoia trees of the Big Sur.

Earthquakes in Northern California

It feels a bit bittersweet starting off my California recaps talking about this, but it would feel even more wrong not to acknowledge what has happened there. As many of you may know, the hubby and I decided to celebrate our one year anniversary a little early with a second honeymoon to California. It was a wonderful experience, but just a few hours after we left Napa and San Francisco, an earthquake struck.

Pattern Mixing: Florals & Polka Dots

So excited to have a break from scrubs. We've been in lab so much lately that I have been stuck wearing scrubs daily. And while they are comfy, I can't help but feeling a little slovenly in them. I definitely think that I'm going to be the type of dentist that wears business professional clothes and a white coat everyday as opposed to scrubs. Anyway, you can see that I went a little overboard with the excitement of getting to wear real clothes again. I love patterns and could't decide on just one so I thought that I would try my hand at pattern mixing. I picked to completely different/competing patterns, but I think they work well together because I kept them in the same color scheme.

Kate Spade in Review

I realized in January that a little extra incentive would be needed to keep me focused during the remainder of the school year. As handbags are a constant desire, but a rare purchase for me, I knew that a new purse would be the perfect reward. I decided that this would be separate from my yearly clothing budget, so I started setting a little aside here and there. For a while, I thought that I might purchase another Michael Kors bag, but as time went on I decided to buy my first Kate Spade Bag. So imagine my delight when I received this email during my last week of school...

The Lilly Pulitzer Sale: Are You Ready?

You all know how much I love a Lilly dress, which is why in the last few years, many of the milestones in my life involved a Lilly OOTD (more here). However, I have yet to purchase a Lilly Pulitzer item at full price. While the pieces are beautifully made and durable, I just can't bring myself to take that big of a plunge, especially not with my student budget. So I look forward to the Lilly sales all year long. And it's finally here!

Unfortunately, Lilly does not go on sale very often, but when it does oh boy what a sale. Typically, there is one sale in January and one in August and that is it for the year. You may be fortunate enough to find Lilly on sale in a department store or if you're really lucky, you can attend the Lilly Pulitzer Warehouse Sales. As for me, I stick to the online sales where I've picked up beautiful $300 shift dresses for as little as $50. Do you see why all us Lilly Lovers go so crazy around this time of the year? So in anticipation for such a crazy sale, there is work to be done. Here are my tips on scoring your Lilly!

Friday Five

Hello All! Sorry for my lack of posts as of late, but this week I was finishing some things up. I am now officially finished with the first year of dental school. And now that, that is over I have so much to share. But for today here are just a few little snippets of some of my highlights from this week. So in no particular order....

1. The Golden State: We leave this weekend for an entire week in beautiful California. I have been looking forward to this trip for months, I just can't believe that it's finally here. We are taking complete advantage of my week off from school to take a second honeymoon and celebrate our first year of marriage. Our actual anniversary isn't until the end of September, but with my schedule the way it is, I don't know that we will be able to spend a whole lot of time together then. Thus, we are celebrating early.

Mini Celebration

This is my omg I can't believe it face! I'm still a bit incredulous about the fact that we are done with our basic sciences. Approximately, 50 exams later and the first year is complete. We will still be having an exam a week, but the focus will now be 100% dental related. So after my last basic sciences exam, I was ready to celebrate! Kicked things off with a six hour nap. Yea, I know I'm super exciting. After my nap, we headed to dinner at one of my favorite local restaurants.

Floral Crossing

I love florals, literally adore them. I'm totally going to be that lady with a house full of floral printed wallpaper and proud of it. As it so happens, this LP print "Worth Blue May Flowers" just so happens to be one of my all time favorites.

My Study Mantra

With at least one exam a week for the past year, I like to think that I'm fairly decent at studying. It's just become apart of my routine and without even realizing it I developed a few rules to help myself cope with the difficulty of dental school. So I'd like to share my study mantra with all of you with the hopes that it will help someone else out there.

Jean, Jean, & More Jean

Last night, husband's plane was delayed by several hours. So his 11pm arrival time got pushed back to around 3am. It was very early this morning by the time we got home, so as you might imagine we slept in. When we did wake up, it was raining out so I went for an easy go to outfit while we ran errands; my favorite jeans and a chambray shirt.

Friday Five

Hoorah! I've reached yet another Friday, meaning one less 60hour week of this summer schedule. So I thought I would share a few things that I'm especially thankful for and happy about right now.

1. Iphone Upgrade!
I finally upgraded to an iPhone 5S! Yes, I know that there are rumors that the iPhone 6 is coming out within the next few months, but who actually knows when that will be. Plus, I really don't care about having the newest model phone. I just need something that works for me. And unfortunately, my 4S wasn't cutting it anymore. The battery was no longer holding a charge and I basically had to keep in plugged in at all times. When I checked with my phone carrier, I had two options. Option A was to get a free refurbished iPhone 4S. Uh, no thank you! In my experience, refurbished stuff is bound to break again. Option B, was to get a new iPhone 5S. Thanks to an awaiting upgrade and summer sales, it only cost me $100. I'm ok with that, especially because I'm loving the sleeker thinner design of the iPhone 5.
