Yea, I had never heard of it either
But it's most known for being Alaska's first city
This place may have boomed with the establishment of the salmon industry, but I still see it as a sleepy little fishing town constantly surrounded by mist and fog and rain.
Basically, I'm in love.
You need a good raincoat to brave a wet place like this. After all it is in the middle or a temperate rainforest. But you guys know I love a good rainforest. We got rained on just about everyday of our Alaskan Cruise and while the other cruisers complained, I was in heaven. We happily braved the elements to explore all the cute port towns in the downpour because...."rain is grace, rain is the sky descending to Earth"
Just have a few snapshots from the town because we spent most of our day in port on a boating excursion through Misty Fjord (more on that tomorrow)
The main street called Creek Street makes this town so unique. The street is actually a river running through with shops raised on wooden boards coming out of the water. It was the weirdest thing to be walking along main street, only to look down and spot a bear pulling salmon out of the water. I know that may sound a bit scary to be so close to a bear, but I love that they have developed a city that still incorporates and supports its wildlife.
cutest little fishing town
living up to its reputation as the 4th wettest place in the world!
It's so amazing that our first official stop in Alaska happened to be a visit to Alaska's first official city. And while we loved strolling through this rainy fishing town, we loved it even more because it was the gateway to our first taste of the Alaskan Wilderness. Can't wait to come back and share more from our day.
